Walkie Talkies - An Overview

Walkie Talkies are portable, hand-held communication devices. Their history can be traced back to the Second World War. There were many different versions created for the different armed forces, though it wasn’t until after the war that the commercial versions were created.

Walkie Talkie Features
Walkie talkies are unique in that the half-duplex channel they operate on will only allow one radio to transmit at any time, though there are no limits to the amount that can listen. Rather than a telephone style earpiece, walkie talkies have an internal speaker so the unit can be used away from the ear. Walkie talkies can communicate between both fixed radio stations and to other mobile handheld units. Normally, the shape of a walkie talkie is that of a large telephone handset, and they incorporate a thick, fixed antenna at the top.

Brief Walkie Talkie History
The fist radio audio transmiter and receiver that was coined the ‘walkie talkie’ was created by Motorola. Those involved developed the Motorola SCR-300 using frequency modulation. This first walkie talkie was actually backpack mounted. Is wan’t long afterward, in the middle of WW2 that Motorola developed the ‘Handie Talkie’ which is a design we would now associate as a ‘Walkie Talkie’. Although it performance was down, it paved the way as the first self-contained device.

Wakie Talkies Today
Walkie talkies feature in a number of different environments nowadays, including military, outdoor recreation and public safety. Because of this the quality and prices of the walkie talkies vary immensely, from kids walkie talkies to heavy duty commercial units. Walkie talkie housings have reduced in size as the technology has improved and components become smaller. More often than not, commercial walkie talkies are more robust, or in a protective case, and are limited to just a few designated frequencies. Consumer versions of walkie talkies on the other hand are capable of scanning over wider ranges and bands, and are often smaller in size. Kids walkie talkies are normally exempt from any licencing requirements as they are lower power units. Although they may look the same as a fully fledged walkie talkie, they are normally lower-tech when compared.
